Gingerbread thanks to Cyanogenmod

I successfully rooted my HTC Desire phone recently, I was a bit worried beforehand of bricking the device but decided to give it a go. And I'm so glad I did, its like having a new phone, faster, longer battery life, better design and more features to use. Plus I can now back up my phone whenever I want, it feels like I have more control over this mini laptop I carry around with me.

Cyanogenmod

The key is rooting the phone, and I found excellent instructions here:

Then choose a good ROM to install. The Cyanogenmod suited my phone perfectly running the latest Gingerbread version of Android and freeing my from being slaved to HTC who might never release a new OS for my phone, why would they when they have new phones to sell.

I also managed to do the same for a HTC Wildfire, although lost the ability to boot back into HTC Sense it is still worthwhile doing. Gingerbread under Cyanogenmod is miles better than FroYo under HTC Sense.

One tip, ensure you export all your phone's contacts to the SD card before you start and then import into Gmail, otherwise you risk losing some of your contact details that aren't backed up by HTC.
